CBD is a compound extracted from the Cannabis plant. In the case of Mémé this being industrial hemp. The reason hemp is used is to make sure that legally we conform and ensure that our products do not contain excess volumes of THC.

    Description

    CBD extraction

    Step 1: Primary extraction

A mechanical processing of hemp flower, stalks and leaves takes place followed by an extraction of the oils from the plant. This results in a substance that is similar to tar or molasses in appearance. This sticky, oily substance is rich in terpenes and cannabanoids. This substance is known as full spectrum extract. In many territories around the world, full spectrum based CBD products are fully legal. However, full spectrum typically has around 0.3% THC, hence the need for further manipulation.

New cannabis plant strains are being developed with incredibly low THC concentrations that adhere to the legal 0.001% requirement in South Africa. Unfortunately none are yet 100% reliable which is why we are required to remove THC from the extract.

    Step 2: Distillate filtering

The full spectrum extract undertakes a further filtering process known as chromatography whereby THC is removed. This substance left over has an appearance not dissimilar to honey. The filtering process is very delicate and we take care to ensure we are not removing other beneficial terpenes and cannabanoids at this step. However, it is most important for us to legally comply and to provide you piece of mind that we provide an end product containing less than 0.001% THC.

    Step 3: Isolate extraction

Isolate extraction can take place from either the broad spectrum or full spectrum distillate. This process is essentially the opposite of having something removed from it.

When we extract isolate from cannabis, the end result is a 99.9% pure CBD, fat soluble white powder.

    Warnings

RISKS OF LONG-TERM USE: There are some slight risks associated with using CBD in high doses or for extended periods of time, including; Mild Low Blood Pressure, Dry Mouth, Lightheadedness, Sedation, Reduced activity of T and B Cells, Decreased Fertilization Capacity, Reduced p-Glycoprotein activity and Reduced activity of Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) Enzyme.

USE DURING PREGNANCY: Do NOT use this product if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant soon. The active ingredients of CBD can reach the unborn child through the blood. Some children whose mother has used CBD during pregnancy have stunted growth, sleeping problems, are hyperactive or suffer from concentration problems.

Breastfeeding: Do NOT use this product if you are breastfeeding or stop breastfeeding. CBD can enter the breast milk and may then cause adverse effects in the baby.

DRINKING ALCOHOL? Alcohol and CBD reinforce and significantly enhance each other’s action. Therefore, limit the use of alcohol and preferably do not drink it. Absolutely do not drive a car if you have been drinking alcohol while using CBD.

TRAVELING AND LEGAL: In many countries, the possession and use of CBD products may still strictly prohibited. Make sure you check the prevailing laws before you travel. If you are traveling and want to take your medicinal CBD with you, you must apply for an official approval.

THE SIDE EFFECTS OF CBD: These are not fully known yet. You will not get ‘high’ from the CBD. The relatively low levels of THC in this product may give the ‘high’ effect for those with hypersensitivity to THC. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer too much from any of the below-mentioned side effects; or if you experience other side effects that you are concerned about; Anxiety and depression, Psychosis, Nausea, Vomiting, Drowsiness, Dry mouth, Dizziness, Diarrhea and Changes in appetite.

DEPENDENCY: This generally does not occur if you use CBD only as a health supplement. Your intake of CBD is usually in a lower dose than in the case of recreational use of cannabis. However, you do need to be careful if you have previously experienced addiction. Prolonged use of high doses of CBD can lead to dependence. Stopping can cause withdrawal symptoms, such as restlessness, irritability, insomnia and nausea. As far as is known, it is mainly THC that causes these addictive effects. Therefore, the risk of dependence is low and not expected in this product.
